Pistol firing is a safe, wholesome sport that challenges even the most experienced long-gun shooters. Building on the basic shooting fundamentals learned when firing rifles, successful pistol firers become experts of sight alignment and trigger control in order to master the sport. 4-H Shooting Sports offers safety instruction as well as recreational and competitive shooting events in smallbore (.22 caliber) and air pistol. Popular courses of fire include .22 slow and rapid fire target pistol, and 1/10 scale steel silhouette matches conducted with scoped air pistols. All 4-H members are eligible to participate in the pistol discipline, though Junior classified members (ages 8-10 years old) will conduct most events from modified shooting positions.
