New World Screwworm

Managing the threat and protecting animal health

The New World screwworm is a fly larva that can burrow into and feed on the flesh of living warm-blooded animals like livestock, wildlife, birds, pets, and even humans. The Arizona Livestock Incident Response Team (ALIRT) is leading efforts to detect the pest and protect Arizona's livestock.

Early detection is critical as the screwworm can quickly cause serious harm. If you have animals, be sure to inspect for wounds regularly, treat wounds promptly, and watch for unusual or non-healing wounds. Report suspected cases immediately to diseasereporting@azda.gov
