Agricultural producers in rural Arizona face unique challenges when supplying drinking water to livestock, particularly in locations far from utility power lines or where fuel-powered pumping systems are costly and carbon-intensive. While traditional solutions such as windmills and fossil-fuel pumps remain options, solar photovoltaic (PV) pumping systems are gaining popularity due to their affordability, low maintenance requirements, renewable energy source, and suitability for Arizona’s abundant sunshine. This publication introduces the development and use of a mobile, solar-powered water pumping system designed to demonstrate PV-Direct pumping technology and educate farmers, ranchers, and the public on how solar-powered livestock watering systems operate, including their components, performance, and practical application in real-world settings.
