New World Screwworm

Managing the threat and protecting animal health

The New World screwworm is a fly larva that can burrow into and feed on the flesh of living warm-blooded animals like livestock, wildlife, birds, pets, and even humans. This site serves as a central hub for screwworm information in Arizona, connecting you with trusted guidance developed by University of Arizona experts across Cooperative Extension, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Arizona Livestock Incident Response Team (ALIRT).

If you have animals, be sure to regularly inspect for wounds, treat wounds promptly, and watch for unusual or non-healing wounds. Report any suspected cases to your veterinarian or to diseasereporting@azda.gov.
