Terrarium, vivarium, aquarium, paludarium are all related but different. This class will discuss the differences between them but focus on the Terrarium. Terrariums create a great way to grow plants that like more humidity in Arizona’s arid environment, and once set up are incredibly self-sufficient. See lots of photos and examples for inspiration.

Learning Objectives:

  • The differences between terrarium, vivarium, aquarium, paludarium and dish gardens.
  • What types of containers work best for terrariums
  • How to prepare your terrarium for success
  • Types of plants that work best (and don’t work) for terrariums.
  • Maintaining a terrarium with good conditions for light and water with tips to reduce algae and pests.

Speaker: Master Gardener Jan Schreier

Jan Schreier has been a Master Gardener for 20 years, and maintains active Master Gardener status in both Minnesota and Arizona. Two, very different environments. She has learned to adapt plants and techniques that work well in one environment to the other but relies more on choosing the right plants for the environment in which it is growing. She founded the Minnesota Water Garden Society and is the current Newsletter Editor and Chairs their annual Plant Sale. She started her own business called Happy Ponds, which designs, installs, maintains and consults on water gardens. In the summer, you will find her in her lush Minnesota gardens and ponds, and in winter she escapes the arctic wasteland to enjoy the sun and completely different beauty of the low desert.

The DIG Classes are returning to in-person classes on location at the Maricopa County Cooperative Extension Office at 4341 E Broadway Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85040, along with keeping many of our online classes. Walk-ins are welcome, but space at the Extension Office is limited so early registration is recommended.
