Septic Systems

Leach fields benefit from a combination of undisturbed soil and oxygen to function properly.  Leave native vegetation like grasses.  Avoid:

  • placing structures over leach fields
  • having hoofed animals or driving over leach field - will compact the soil, reducing oxygen, drainage and evaporation
  • driving vehicles near septic tank or over leach fields  - can crack pipes
  • planting edibles - chance of soil having harmful pathogens
  • planting trees - roots are invasive - can get into leach lines and septic tanks
