Home Horticulture Course

The Home Horticulture Course brings science-based information on home gardening and landscaping to the public. This course provides the same training as the Master Gardener volunteer program without volunteer obligations. This course does not lead to certified Master Gardener status.

Acceptance into the Course: There are routinely more qualified applicants for the program than available openings. The application will remain open until enrollment is reached. Once you have registered and paid for the course you are guaranteed acceptance into the program.

Maricopa County Cooperative Extension Home Horticulture Courses are offered twice a year

  • Spring session: January – May
  • Fall Session: July 5 – November 7, 2024

Registration Closes 11:59pm June 22, 2024

Tuition: $375.00 non-refundable payment in full due by June 23, 2024

Online Course

  •  anywhere with an internet connection, usually in the convenience of the home
  • delivered through University of Arizona Desire 2 Learn (D2L), an online classroom
  • access to computer or tablet connected to the internet, and use of the Zoom platform are required

This Course Provides

  • Arizona Master Gardener manual and online lecture series used during training of Master Gardener volunteers.
  • Gardening and general horticulture topics and practices to prepare graduates to meet gardening challenges specific to the desert environment of Maricopa County.
  • Information on environmentally responsible gardening and landscaping practices.
  • Training for finding the most authoritative sources to answer questions about gardening and landscape topics.            

Weekly Time Requirements

  • 5-6 hours of weekly study time reading and videos, at the convenience of your schedule
  • Weekly Discussion Forum (optional, but recommended) Wednesday evenings 6:30-7:30pm
  • Optional: Pass a final exam to receive a certificate of completion.

Certificate Requirements

  • Weekly assignments
  • Weekly quizzes
  • Final exam with at least 70%
