ALIRT Incident Reporting
ALIRT investigates unusual livestock disease events. We do not respond to normal production animal events or replace the typical interactions producers have with veterinarians.
Costs covered by the program include:
- An ALIRT trained private veterinarian to conduct a ranch visit and investigate an unusual livestock disease event.
- Sample collection and laboratory costs to analyze the sample.
- Additional expertise such as range specialists or poisonous plant experts.
Report a potential incident
Step 1: Connect with an expert by phone or email
- Email diseasereporting@azda.gov, which connects directly to the State Veterinarian and Assistant State Veterinarians.
- Call your local livestock Veterinarian first. If you cannot reach them, contact your:
- Local Cooperative Extension Office
- Local Arizona Department of Agriculture Livestock Office

Step 3: Be available to the ALIRT team
ALIRT will only respond at the request of the producer. If an ALIRT Response is initiated the producer needs to be available to offer assistance as requested and answer questions. It is important to compile a herd health history, use the Incident Report Sheet to help with collecting this information.
Next steps
- After a livestock incident is reported the information will be distributed to the ALIRT Executive Committee who will determine if an ALIRT Response should be activated.
- Once an ALIRT Response is activated an ALIRT First Responder will contact the producer to coordinate the collection of materials for laboratory testing and any other processes that need to be initiated.
- If the incident is reported to ALIRT by an ALIRT First Responder that responder will typically be the one assigned to the response.
- All findings and recommendations will be provided to the producer by the first responder.
