Shooting Sports Disciplines
Archery
Archery involves a fascinating group of sports for youth of all ages. The fundamentals are simple. The requirements are few. A new archer can be shooting well within a short time, if he or she has the benefit of a knowledgeable mentor and instructor. The 4-H Archery discipline includes instruction and practice using bare-bows, Olympic style recurve, and compound bows in recreational, competitive and hunting environments. 4-H shooting sports members develop their coordination, confidence, safety and mechanical technical knowledge while participating in the Archery discipline.

Pistol (air and small bore)
Pistol firing is a safe, wholesome sport that challenges even the most experienced long-gun shooters. Building on the basic shooting fundamentals learned when firing rifles, successful pistol firers become experts of sight alignment and trigger control in order to master the sport. 4-H Shooting Sports offers safety instruction as well as recreational and competitive shooting events in smallbore (.22 caliber) and air pistol. Popular courses of fire include .22 slow and rapid fire target pistol, and 1/10 scale steel silhouette matches conducted with scoped air pistols. All 4-H members are eligible to participate in the pistol discipline, though Junior classified members (ages 8-10 years old) will conduct most events from modified shooting positions.

A lot of shooting sports enthusiasts believe accurate, safe rifle firing forms the basis for success in other shooting sports specialized disciplines. 4-H rifle instruction begins with the basics of safe firearm handling, range procedures, part identification, and shooting fundamentals and skills. Once a basic foundation of knowledge is formed, the discipline offers instruction in ballistics and entry-level precision shooting. Popular courses of fire include National Standard 3-position air rifle and scoped smallbore rifle CMP matches.
