First Smiles

Overview

Tooth decay is an infectious bacterial disease that affects more children than asthma, hay fever or obesity. Children don’t have these bacteria when they are born, but get them from the adults. Untreated tooth decay can cause infection in other parts of the body and lead to many other health problems. In Pinal County, 41 percent of kindergartners have untreated tooth decay.

First Smiles' goal is to help the children of Pinal County get a healthy start when it comes to their teeth. Extension offers free oral health education, screening, fluoride varnish and tooth brushes to children up to age 5. Research shows that healthier moms lead to a healthier babies, so we offer screening and education for expectant mothers too.

Free screenings are fun and interactive and can be done in your home, at our office, in the preschool classroom or in a park.
