If you’ve participated in one of our past events, you’ll notice a few changes in 2025. The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Horse Program will be partnering with the Dale and Patti Shirley Equine Encore Foundation to host this next event. Equine Encore, accredited by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, is a local non-profit organization that works to provide a retirement home for racehorses who have served the industry well but whose careers have come to an end. And, as in prior years, a portion of proceeds from this event will go to support our partner nonprofit, Equine Encore.

After eight years of working together, the original members of the Southern Arizona Equine Health Council have shifted focus and are now devoting their time to other projects including Reata’s new mixed animal veterinary hospital, Adobe’s partnership with other local equine veterinarians focusing on veterinary student training, and our farrier partners focusing on their clients and improving their work life balance.

With this change we are also shifting some of our topic areas in response to participant feedback over the years. For example, during the morning sessions national equine nutritionist, Dr. Masa Williams, will be addressing the often-requested subject of old horse nutrition with applicable solutions to your older horse and their feeding, management, and comfort. Dr. Madelyn Melchiors will discuss and demonstrate the benefits of equine chiropractic care, as well as, the importance of teeth care. Dr. Betsy Greene and Ashley Wright will provide insights into parasites in horses. In the afternoon we will host Dr. Angelo Telatin in the large arena focusing on horse behavior and training theories that will be directly applicable to you and your horse including in-hand, under saddle, and trailer loading. In the show barn next to the arena we will have opportunities to participate in small group focused learning rotations on several topics including body condition scoring, basic confirmation, taking vital signs, choosing appropriate feeds and more.

Another big change to note is with the ongoing remodeling at the Food Product and Safety Laboratory we will be hosting the event at the University of Arizona Al-Marah Equine Center which is located on Bear Canyon Rd. Program formatting will change slightly to accommodate the space available at our new location and will allow us to add more individual hands-on interaction.
