Part of our ongoing series exploring invasive plant species in our Sonoran Desert — one plant at a time. Ben Tully, Invasive Species Outreach Coordinator with UA Cooperative Extension, will share essential insights on each species’ history, spread, identification, and effective removal strategies.
This month, Ben highlights Arundo donax, commonly known as giant reed. Towering in our washes and resembling a cross between corn and bamboo, this aggressive plant is hard to miss. It consumes valuable groundwater, spreads rapidly, and outcompetes native vegetation in fragile riparian areas.
