March's Urban Ag Hour
The Urban Ag Hour is a new monthly initiative hosted by the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension's Urban Agriculture, Small-Scale, and Beginning Farmer Program in collaboration with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. March's event will feature a talk by Extension Agent Anita Thompson on seed production for small farms, followed by AZ Farm to School Network Procurement Chair Rachel Gomez-Acosta's talk on market channels and strategies to consider for local food in schools. Participants will gain knowledge specific to small-scale and urban farming, while having an opportunity to connect with service providers, Extension expertise and other farmers in attendance!

Speakers:
Anita Thompson is the Assistant Area Agent in Navajo, Apache and Northern Greenlee Counties supporting the development of ecologically and operationally sustainable rangelands, ranches, and farms. Her research and topics of interest include agroecology/sustainable agriculture, seed sovereignty education and outreach, small farm and ranch support, livestock care and wellness, and botany for farmers and ranchers. She is also a small-scale foundational seed farmer of locally harvested native/wild seeds, and grows culturally relevant food and fiber seed for a local non-profit.
Rachel Gomez-Acosta is passionate about engaging in purposeful collaboration around building healthy, thriving communities. She has 12 years of experience as a school nutrition professional and is deeply committed to supporting local producers, strengthening equitable food access, and celebrating Arizona's diverse and dynamic food system. Rachel is the Procurement Chair of the AZ Farm to School Network.
