Overview
Journey of Opportunities for Leaders of Tomorrow (JOLT) is an annual summer camp experience for Arizona 4-H Teens. Young leaders from around the state of Arizona gather at the Harold & Mitzie James 4-H Camp & Outdoor Learning Center to develop life skills, make new friends, and make new memories.
The mission of JOLT is to create an environment where Arizona teens can learn how to empower personal leadership, hone in on creativity, and encourage positive social change in their own community by upholding the tradition of making the best better. The theme for JOLT 2022 is Escape Room Mystery: Unlock Your Future.
What to expect?
Each camper gets to select an Involvement Committee (IC), a track that is an area of interest to them—Agriculture, Civic Engagement & Community Service, Communications, Healthy Living, and STEM. Many experiences throughout the week will revolve around which track each participant selects. Outside of each camper’s track, there will also be a variety of other fun activities for all campers to choose from (some are listed below):
- Options to go hiking
- Arts and crafts
- Campfire night
- Recreation time (basketball, hiking, baseball, crafting, etc.)
- Team Challenges
Involvement Committee Track Descriptions
Communications The communication track will be filled with fun activities to help understand why communication skills are important in everyday life. Through this track, you will learn not only how to properly give a speech but also how to give speeches with little to no time to prepare. Facilitated by Ambassador President Ellie Pascavis and Communication Ambassador Ameythist Stewart.
Civic Engagement & Community Service Sign up for the civic engagement track if you want hands-on fun while also helping out the camp with new community service projects every day! From painting to trail maintenance, keeping James 4-H Camp and the beautiful nature around it safe, clean, and ready to explore is a top priority of this track! Facilitated by Foundation Ambassador Ellen Liebig.
STEM If you think detecting fingerprints, racing boats, and building circuits sounds like fun, then STEM is the track for you! This track will be filled with unique activities relating to the four aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to challenge your creative thinking and create some friendly competition! Facilitated by STEM Ambassador Robert Day.
Agriculture In this track we will cover how Agriculture has changed throughout Arizona history, and how we will carry the torch and shape Agriculture for the future. We will dive in depth into how inventions and ideas have changed agriculture and the cultural and economic impacts of the changes. Each day we will progress through time exploring how different inventions and ideas provided the pathway for future generations. At the end of the week, we will design our own invention for the future of Agriculture. Facilitated by Agriculture Ambassador Benjamin Coleman.
Healthy Living The healthy living track will help you learn more about yourself and teach you how to have a healthier lifestyle through activities like morning hikes, scavenger hunts, stargazing, and much more throughout the course of the program. Be ready to have fun while learning about yourself at the same time! Facilitated by Healthy Living Ambassador Carlos Delgado.
Talent Show & Masquerade Dance
Prepare to see the talents of Arizona 4-H'ers as there will be a talent showcase where you can show off your talents and see your friends’ hidden skills! Don’t forget to pack a mask, but not the kind that hides your mouth, one that only covers the top half of your face! There will be a Masquerade dance where even though we all know each other will still create some mystery to our evening!
