Download Recording

Since the Thrive Model of youth development was introduced to the 4-H landscape (Arnold, 2018), it has illuminated the hidden pieces of 4-H youth experience which lead to the successful outcomes celebrated by program leaders. In 2020, 4-H professionals from around the country collaborated to expand the understanding and use of Thrive Model through additional research and resources for professionals and 4-H volunteer leaders. Arizona 4-H agents Mike Hauser and Peter Hooper along with colleague Nick Morris participated in the effort and will present an overview of the model connecting it to the organizational history and previous Positive Youth Development models. Notably, they will share a detailed description of the seven key indicators including example scenarios for a multitude of youth experience contexts. Participants will be encouraged to consider how each of indicators can be envisioned within their own youth programming.

These interactive county maps could also be used by other Cooperative Extension programs to better visualize available resources and understand and address community needs at a local level. This presentation will orient participants to the maps and how to use them in program planning. Link to Maps: https://nutrition.cals.arizona.edu/outreach/snap-ed/county-maps

Film Screening: RESILIENCE
Pre-Register here for film instructions

Most of us are aware that the quality of a child’s home environment impacts their life as an adult. Negative early events involving neglect, divorce, and substance abuse are collectively known as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). There is growing evidence that “while the child may not remember, the body remembers.” Participants will view a one-hour film called Resilience. Resilience is a thought-provoking documentary produced by James Redford addressing the relationship between ACEs and longer-term outcomes such as destructive behavior and medical diseases. Participants will be encouraged to take part in the Oct. 7 session to discuss Extension’s role in building resilience.

3:30pm - 4:30pm

There is a growing movement highlighting the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) – such as abuse, neglect, divorce - and longer-term impacts such as disease, homelessness, and incarceration. Communities can make a difference with programming that prevents ACEs and mitigates the effects of ACEs in individuals. This session will share examples of FCHS, 4-H and Agriculture and Natural Resources programming that foster resilience in children and adults. This will be an interactive session to uncover and expand the contributions of Extension to this movement. Watching the Resilience documentary on Oct. 6 is strongly encouraged.
