Past Activities
Bar V Ranch Open House – Participants got a tour of the ranch, learned about animal husbandry, grass identification and animal identification, then hiked to Mezcal Springs. Livestock Area Agent Ashley Wright educated participants about bovine body condition scores, low-stress stockmanship and moving cattle based on flight zones.
Cowkid Campout - Springbreak overnight at Bar V Ranch. Nature hike, seed restoration, plant animal ID, and campfire cooking.
Rangeland Monitoring
Participants identified key plant species at Bar V Ranch and, along with friends from Tucson Village Farm, Pima County and the Natural Resource Conservation Service, collected more than 100 plant samples.
Cowkid Campout
Attendees learned about mountain ranges surrounding Bar V, toured ranch headquarters and saw the first calf of the fall season. Campers learned about leave-no-trace land ethics, made seed balls to revegetate an old ranch road and learned about native grass species and conservation.
Cattle Roundup
4-H helped with a cattle roundup and drive to Bar V headquarters in preparation for a pregnancy check and to begin the calf weaning process. With help from the UArizona College of Veterinary Medicine, attendees learned how to assess cattle body condition and watched veterinary technicians scan cattle with an ultrasound machine to check for pregnancy.
