Mohave AZ Health Zone

The goal of the AZ Health Zone is to influence healthy eating and active living in a positive way that promotes health and reduces disease among people living in Arizona. To accomplish this in Mohave County, we have partnered with several school districts in the area, such as Kingman Unified, Valentine, Topock and Mohave Accelerated Learning Center to establish school gardens and provide nutrition and gardening education to their students. At Valentine Elementary we provide gardening and nutrition lessons to grades K-4 while grades 5-8 receive lessons focused on nutrition education and physical activity.
AZ Health Zone also works with Kingman Unified and Mohave Accelerated Learning Center to revise and implement their district’s local wellness policy with the purpose to create an environment for children that makes the healthy choice the easy choice. We help support the implementation of nutrition education in their schools by providing cooking demonstrations and short nutrition lessons at Kingman Middle School and White Cliffs Middle School.
In collaboration with the Mohave County Department of Public Health we created the Mohave County Food Systems Coalition which works towards increasing the amount of healthy foods coming into Mohave County and ensuring that those foods reach the people in need. Our work through the coalition has laid the groundwork for us to connect people and organizations, such as the Havasu Community Health Foundation Food Bank and the New Horizon Community Garden in Lake Havasu City. These partners work together to make systems more efficient and find creative solutions to some of our County’s largest barriers to accessing healthy foods.
AZ Health Zone helps seniors put a little play in their day by leading two physical activity clubs. Residents at Harrison Haven and Kingman Heights Apartments enjoy socially interactive physical activity sessions and attend a series of lessons that provide information on healthy eating and physical activity.
