The Goal of AZ Health Zone Santa Cruz County (UA SNAP-Ed) is to empower participants to make healthy food choices and participate in an active lifestyle. To reach that goal UA-SNAP-Ed has collaborated with local school districts providing nutrition education classes or presentations to elementary age students. The SNAP-Ed team also provides technical assistance to local school districts and charter schools with their Local Wellness policies and School Wellness initiatives. The SNAP-Ed team participates in Walk to School Days, and bike rodeos, while also supporting school functions by either providing healthy snacks or demonstrating physical activity websites families can use at home. Many schools have also taken advantage of trainings provided to help teachers use physical activity as a modality in the classroom; this not only helps engage the brain but also makes learning fun. For parents interested in learning more about nutrition, adult nutrition classes are offered by the SNAP-Ed team at several schools in Santa Cruz County.
AZ Health Zone Santa Cruz County and the 4H Healthy Living Ambassadors collaborated to paint stencils on two elementary playgrounds to encourage students to be active during recess. They also work together to offer an after school program at one of the local elementary schools
Early childhood centers also receive guidance on writing Empower policies, technical assistance and trainings on how to increase physical activity into their day. Students at the same early childhood centers receive monthly physical activity and nutrition presentations to reinforce trainings received by staff.
