Water Wise Brown Bag Seminar: Old Bisbee Fire Wise and Bisbee Dark Skies

Featuring Al Anderson, Anne Carl & Bruce Syrette

Old Bisbee Firewise (OBF) is a local organization in Cochise County, AZ dedicated to a community of people who want to protect property at the urban-wildland interface. Bisbee has burned to the ground twice in its history. Local fire personnel agree that fires will happen again in this area. OBF’s main goal is to that this community’s collective fire risk is reduced and that it becomes more resilient to fire. The way to do this is by sticking to an effective plan. Old Bisbee Fire Wise founders, Al Anderson and Anne Carl will explain what this plan looks like and give the first steps that homeowners can do to keep their properties safe from fire devastation. The Bisbee Dark Skies initiative was started by Bruce Syrett, an astronomy enthusiast for 45 years. Bruce enjoys exploring the night skies and wants to make sure future generations can continue to explore the starry skies of Southeastern Arizona as well. After realizing that Bisbee was so close to having this distinction of a Dark Sky Community because of the Cochise County lighting ordinance, he decided to start an initiative to make Bisbee official. His goal is to help the community to realize what it has and to take steps to preserve it for future generations. Bruce will explain what being an official Dark Sky Community means, the specific requirements to become one, and its benefits.
