A new effort has been undertaken to transform wastes to resources with a focus on bio-energy. Transforming the by-products or residues from bio-energy crops into a resource has been a new thrust. Of particular interest has been the conversion through pyrolysis of bio-energy residuals into oils, gases and bio-char. Currently laboratory, greenhouse and field efforts are being made to look at the effects of bio-char on soils.
